  3. $66 Billion in Economic Activity Generated by the Maritime Industry in 2022

With goods transit valued at $157.2 billion, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region demonstrates once again that the maritime industry is a key economic driver that continues to stimulate growth, support port workers and help to strengthen regional and national economies.

The numbers recently published in the Economic Impacts of Maritime Shipping in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region in 2022 highlight the considerable economic impact of maritime trade in the Canadian and US economies. The study also reveals that maritime activities played a crucial role in job creation. All these data highlight the fundamental economic importance of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region, which is much more than a vital passageway for cargo.
