The MEA is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. The MEA, its members and employees have played a key role in the maritime industry since 1969. We’ve come a long way since then.
We were the first to use computers to dispatch port employees on the docks and we’re progressing through constant innovation. We recently launched a port employee portal in addition to the AI Galileo project. We’ve also reviewed our mission and our values and established a Shared Services Centre to better serve our members and our employees.
The ports of Hamilton, Trois-Rivières and Bécancour are growing rapidly and we recently signed a six-year agreement with Port of Montréal checkers.
However, we’re still facing challenges. The 24% cumulative drop in container volume since 2022 at the Port of Montréal is concerning. While the mediation process with the Montréal longshoremen’s union is not going as planned, reaching a negotiated settlement remains a priority.
Incidentally, we are staying on top of the economic and geopolitical situation in order to ensure supply for the people of Québec and Canada.
